Class Room Clutter

Whenever I would enter my classes, I always found students left their used pens with empty refills on the desks which were gathered and thrown into dustbins. This we all have seen and must have even done it because these pens are disposable and are economical and why not.........
In this era of use and throw, a disposable pen costing merely five or ten rupees stands no value after the ink is over. Gone are the days when pen was a unique stationery gift, a birthday gift for a girl, a gift for men. I believe, things are changing rapidly.
But many times, I wonder, what we are doing with the environment in the name of disposables. A single-use pen made of plastic is definitely adding to the already mammoth amount of plastic available around us. This demon of plastic that is invincible has one solution that is to reuse which the GenG has no interest in doing so. But are we going to leave a scorched planet to our posterity, are all the talks on elite platforms to save earth are mere talks.
A journey of a hundred miles begins with the first step. Yes, I believe this is the beginning where we can contribute our mite to save our planet earth.
Are you ready....
I am sure we are..
So, the first step is to learn fidelity with the so-called consumables or try shift our focus to alternative products used to manufacture our pens which not only a breed apart but also environment friendly.
A Note from a student Diary
It was an era when having a fresh notebook, a new Geometry Box or getting a new pencil with an eraser at the top was a dream come true. The best part was that we used them to the fullest. The pencil, the shorter it went, the more precious it was.
A fountain pen was the best gift for students. It may be a birthday gift for a boy or a birthday gift for a girl but a pen stood the test of time and had an irreplaceable place in a student’s school bag.
We have come a long way. Now when I see my children, I believe, the value of pen or a pencil has not changed but the sentiments for it have changed. The love, the fidelity, the belongingness, the bonding of a student with that pen is missing. Now a pen is a mere commodity, a use and throw tool, and there ends the care for emotions.
Dozens of pens of myriad types have flooded the market. The more they are consumed the more cheaper they become and subsequently their cost reduction has brought them from a solid metal pen to throw away plastic pens. A study says that we consume more than 800 million pens every year. I wonder, do we ever realise how much plastic do we produce just to waste after one use! Have we ever bothered to use a refill which was quite common a few years ago. The pencil manufacturers are in danger against the recent spurt in the demand of ball point or gel pens which are one time used pens.
Its time to ponder over. Mercury crossing 55* and we are reeling under the blazing sun, what can we do. Sure, sometime little changes make bigger repercussions. Its high time we shift to paper pens that are environment friendly and trendy too. They are equally useful in a student’s bag.
Take care of small things and big things will fall in place.
